A crew of six (one driver and five gun crewmen) is generally needed to operate the Hummel, and the type had a maximum load of 18 rounds. The Hummel first participated in large scale combat at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, and continue to be employed by the German Wehrmacht until the end of the war.
