ABOUT THE M4 SHERMAN: Dubbed the Sherman after Union General William Tecumseh Sherman by the British, the M4 tank was develop to maximize speed, maneuverability, ease of production and maintenance, and reliability. In combat however, Sherman crews frequently found themselves out-gunned and under-armored against heavy German tanks such as the Tiger and the Panther. Despite the M4's inherent disadvantages, Sherman crews nevertheless were able to overcome heavy German tanks with tactics that took advantage of the M4's superior mobility and with overwhelming numeric superiority.
